On October 24, Kris Jenner joined her daughter Kim Kardashian at the Rome Film Festival for the season two premiere of Kardashian’s legal drama All’s Fair.

On social media, Kardashian confirmed that Jenner wore the Scorpio Cape to the red carpet event, which once belonged to Elizabeth Taylor.

Taylor wore the black hooded cape to Princess Grace of Monaco’s 40th birthday party in 1969, and it sold at auction in 2011 for $74,500.

When in Rome, it seems, the Kardashian-Jenner women turn to archival pieces. For a red carpet appearance on October 24 at the Rome Film Festival, Kim Kardashian promoted the second season of her legal drama All’s Fair in a leopard print Yves Saint Laurent gown from 1986. Her mother, Kris Jenner, joined her at the event, wearing a cape deeply rooted in Hollywood history.

The Scorpio Cape, as it’s called, has a history involving old Hollywood legends like Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly, as well as new Hollywood icons like Kardashian and Jenner themselves. We are in the midst of Scorpio season, and Jenner, a Scorpio herself, will turn 71 next week, on November 5.

The Scorpio Cape is a black velvet hooded cape, which Jenner wore sometimes with the hood up and sometimes with the hood down during her night out in Italy on Saturday. The hood has an ivory silk lining, and glittering scorpions are embroidered across the chest of the sweeping piece. Jenner accessorized with long white gloves, as well as a floor-length white gown underneath her cape.

Per Vogue, Taylor wore the Tiziani Roma design in 1969, when she attended Princess Grace of Monaco’s 40th birthday celebrations that November. Grace, too, was a Scorpio; her birthday was November 12. At the royal’s famous Scorpion Ball—held in Monte Carlo on November 15, 1969—Taylor attended with her husband Richard Burton, who was also a Scorpio.

Taylor, who was born on February 27, was a Pisces. Per People, only Scorpios were invited to the party, which had roughly 60 guests—but guests could come if they were married to a Scorpio, which Taylor was at the time.

As Vogue pointed out, in 1969, Karl Lagerfeld was working as a freelance designer for Tiziani Roma at the time, and Christie’s suggested that the cape may have been one of his creations. The original cape went up for auction at Christie’s in 2011, ultimately fetching $74,500.

In wearing the garment, in addition to referencing Taylor, Jenner also referenced her daughter. Kardashian—who is a self-professed superfan of Taylor’s—wore the cape in the season two trailer for All’s Fair, which she styled with a large diamond necklace. The piece is reminiscent of the million dollar Cartier diamond that Taylor added to her look when attending the Scorpion Ball in Monaco.

Kardashian confirmed on social media that Jenner’s cape was, indeed, Taylor’s, writing on Instagram, “Fun fact about the cape my mom is wearing. It belonged to Elizabeth Taylor, and my mom now owns it and graciously let me wear it in All’s Fair.”

“After Ryan [Murphy, the show’s creator] heard the story of Elizabeth Taylor wearing it to Grace Kelly’s Scorpion Ball, naturally, he made sure to write an episode about Allura Grant [Kardashian’s character] throwing her own Scorpion Ball, and I’m the luckiest girl to have borrowed it from my mom,” Kardashian continued. “Tune in to see it debut in All’s Fair.”
